
A.R. Rahman, the Tamilian music maestro, has brought the pride of the Golden Globes and the dream of the Oscars to India’s doorstep. Rahman started his musical journey at the age of 11 when he trained as a keyboardist. Rahman went on to play for M S Viswanathan, Ramesh Naidu, Zakir Hussain, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan and L. Shankar on world tours. Rahman obtained a scholarship to Trinity College of Music in London, where he graduated with a degree in Western classical music.
Rahman began his own music recording and mixing studio in 1992. The studio, called the Panchathan Record Inn, was built alongside the backyard of his house. The studio has now been developed into India’s most advanced recording studio. He composed music jingles for advertisements and Indian television channels during the initial stage of his career. His first big break came in 1992 when film director Mani Ratnam approached him to compose the music for the Tamil film ‘Roja’. Rahman’s music in the film won him the Rajat Kamal award for Best Music Director at the National Film Awards. Rahman has won three more National Film Awards since then.
* Following the success of ‘Roja’ Rahman started establishing himself in the Tamil film industry by successfully composing music for films like ‘Bombay’, ‘Kadhalan’, ‘Karuththamma’, ‘Minsaara Kanavu’ and ‘Love Birds’. He gained considerable notice in Japan with the success of the film ‘Muthu’. Rahman secured the top spot in the Tamil film industry by composing music for films like ‘Iruvar’ and ‘Kandukondain Kandukondain’.
* Rahman debuted in Bollywood with Ram Gopal Varma’s film ‘Rangeela’. With a success rate resembling the 100% mark, Rahman pioneered the Bollywood music scene with films like ‘Dil Se’, ‘Taal’, ‘Swades’ and ‘Rang De Basanti’ under his belt.
* In 2006, Rahman launched his own music label called KM Music. Its first release was his score for the film ‘Sillunu Oru Kaadhal’. Rahman also co-scored Shekhar Kapoor’s film ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age’ in 2007.
* He composed the album ‘Vande Mataram’ on the occasion of India’s 50th Independence Day.
In 1999, Rahman performed with Michael Jackson in Munich, Germany, for Jackson’s ‘Michael Jackson and Friends Concert’.
* Rahman has bagged four National Awards and a Padma Shri from the Indian government for his contributions towards music.
* Rahman also won the Mauritius National Award and the Malaysian Award for his contribution to music in 1995. Rahman has won six awards in the Best Music category at the Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and 11 awards for his scores at the Filmfare Awards and Filmfare Awards South each.
* In 2006, he received an honorary award from the Stanford University for contributions to global music.
Rahman has sold more than 100 million records of his film scores and soundtracks worldwide during his career.
* He has sold over 200 million cassettes making him one of the world’s all-time top selling recording artists.
* The Time magazine has declared him the ‘Mozart of Madras’, while several other Tamil reporters call him a ‘Musical Storm’.
* With the Oscars on the periphery in 2008, Rahman won the Golden Globe award in the category of Best Original Musical Score for the film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. His performance in the film has assured him international acclaim and a large global fanbase.
Now, as millions of Indian hearts synchronize themselves to the rhythm of ‘Jai Ho’, the country awaits its first Oscar.
